It's been two years now since Luke got his trach and two years with NO hospitalizations or ER trips... but now we broke the record. We had to bring Luke to the ER two weeks ago because he could not keep his O2 stats up after he fell asleep, even on lots of oxygen! It was very strange. He had been battling a cold, but this came out of the blue. Once we got him to the ER, he was fine, of course. He even fell asleep there and did fine on very little oxygen, so... we brought him home, only to have the same thing happen again. We finally came to the conclusion it had something to do with his home humidification system. Hmmmm. So we were able to keep his O2 stats up through the night by giving Luke direct oxygen without running it with the humidified air he usually gets every night for his trach. For some odd reason this seemed to be the trick and surprisingly his trach didn't get too dry overnight. The next night was back to normal. It kind of left us scratching our heads but thankful, I guess, that it was only one night.
Luke is better and over his cold now, but I think this means the cold and flu season might be here early... at least for us anyway.
